Why is Board diversity important?
Governance experts strongly recommend greater Board diversity. To be effective, a Board needs the right group of people with the right set of skills and experience (e.g. target group representative, financial literacy, not-for-profit/philanthropic experience, industry or management experience and of course passion for the cause). It is important to understand where the Board’s strengths and weaknesses lie in these areas and valuable for a good team to have a good balance.
Adding a regular review of the Board’s skills to the Board’s annual agenda, or as a process before Board recruitment can help identify strengths, weaknesses and gaps the Board might like to take into consideration.
